O Second Life (SL) é um mundo criado pela Linden Lab, projetado e mantido por seus próprios residentes (como são chamados os usuários de Second Life).&lt;br /&gt;
Para Kemp e Livingstone (2006), o Second Life, sistema criado pelo Linden Lab, é um mundo 3D persistente ou &amp;quot;metaverso&amp;quot;13. Os usuários acessam o sistema on-line utilizando um sistema cliente-proprietário e interagem com o conteúdo e com os outros &amp;quot;residentes&amp;quot;. Características especiais incluem desde ferramentas simples para a construção de objetos 3D e ferramentas de criação de script interativas para conteúdo – incluindo conectividade com web-pages externas e recursos da internet. SL é melhor que seus antecessores, em vários aspectos.&lt;br /&gt;
Entre os aspectos citados por Kemp e Livingstone (2006), estão:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
o fato de o SL ser livre de uma metáfora imposta, como acontece no MMORPG14 World of Warcraft, o que permite a seus usuários criar cenários adaptados a suas necessidades;&lt;br /&gt;
oferecer ferramentas simples para modificação dos conteúdos do &amp;quot;mundo&amp;quot;; e&lt;br /&gt;
permitir que operações interativas complexas sejam criadas por amadores na Linguagem Lindem de Script (LSL).&lt;br /&gt;
 &lt;br /&gt;
Para Valente e Mattar (2007, p. 155), “O Second Life pode receber várias denominações: realidade virtual, mundo cibernético ou ambiente virtual, dentre outras”; já Tori (2010, p. 201) afirma que: “O SL é um ambiente tridimensional on-line multiusuário, cujos usuários, chamados “residentes”, possuem avatares (humanoides que podem ser configurados e vestidos pelos respectivos donos) por meio dos quais podem passear pelo ambiente e interagir com outros avatares (por chat de texto ou voz)”&lt;br /&gt;
